So I’ve been thinking rather long whether I should hold a party to celebrate me turning 21. It is quite a hassle. With me flying, I only have half the time to plan a party. I have to decide on my guest list, budget, theme, decorations, f&b, etc. etc. Biggest problem of all was I did not know if my roster permits me to hold a common celebration. However, I really want to hold one mainly because I know I will probably enjoy the planning process. The main excitement for me is the process itself really. All the running around can be very fun I know! And of course the bigger point was (not to celebrate my birthday) but to borrow this as an excuse to hold a gathering for various groups of friends (and relatives apparently). I came to notice that 21st parties can be very nice events to meet friends whom you haven’t meet for a long time due to everyone’s schedule clashes.
When my July roster came out, I was delighted to find that 14 Jul is available! So I started to put some ideas into action. (Not much time to lose: countdown 1 month to party date) First thing first, the date is decided so I went ahead to book the location: Pasir Ris Park BBQ Pit 50 & 51. (inspiration from original plan of Hanchong’s 21st) I am so excited because this party is going to be held in the day! I really want my photos to turn out nice. To me, nothing can beat natural lighting. While Singapore is not an ideal country to hold al fresco parties ‘cos of the climate, it is still something that can be done! Even though I faced a bit of disapproval of my idea, I decided to just go ahead and try it out :)
Day 0 of the party, I touchdown from KL turn. Hanchong came to fetch me and Huiyi (who touched down after me from BKK turn). Huiyi stayed over and we rushed through my decorations from about 3am - 8am. Also includes washing up and catching up with each other. Times like this, really makes us think back about the times in ESC when we would rush last minute things on day zero, then take a late shower, and HTHT. Ah, memories.
Day of the party, no surprise that we both overslept! Jingshen had to wait for me for another hour at my house before we start on the day’s errands before the party. Really kind of my Jingshen sista to agree to help me out with the pre party errands! Had to pick up my cake, macarons and fruit tarts (from 3 different friends!).
Reached the venue and it started drizzling which put a huge dampen on my mood. It was as gloomy as the sky was. Really wanted to cry because my food has arrived and I had to ask the caterer to set up in the pavilion because it is sheltered. My whole party plan kind of fell through at that point. Can you even imagine how devastated I was? Thankfully, God was kind and the drizzle subsided. My flower power team immediately went into action and started putting up the decorations! By then my family already arrived and they joined in the preparation as well :D
I always knew Chelsia is tall, but I never knew she is this tall! Apparently, I got to know her a little better after the curtain & bunting decoration because she is the only one that can reach without stretching. HAHA :D
That was the backdrop for my cake cutting. I decided to have another photo booth just so my photos won’t look entirely the same (inspiration from Maggie’s 21st). Got the idea from Pinterest: A lifesize polaroid frame! My flower power team decided to add more deco to it. Love their improvisation!
Trying to fluff up the paper pompom (from Daiso!)
That must be the expression I was having the whole day because even though it is my party. The drizzle made me feel lost. I have to rely a lot on my flower power team to help me with the decorations!
Tadah! Isn’t this beautiful? Hanchong did the cutting (which was super difficult), my flower power team did the pompoms & hanging. All I did was have the idea and wrote the caption. HAHA ikr…
My flower power team handling the flowers. (haha ^^) Baby’s breath courtesy of Sam!!! Pretty flowers make everything look better :)
My guestbook, a polaroid album from Taipei! Gift from Hanchong a year ago. And yes, those are fake daisies from Ikea ;)
Paper straws to go with my mason jars! Absolutely cute!!! Labels were pasted by Huiyi late night. Hehe, so pretty!
My dj station, with help from co-dj, my sister (looking really serious)! :)
Signage made by Maggie for my birthday surprise and I decide to reuse it ‘cos it looks really nice! Bear courtesy of my xiao gu ;)
WELCOME sign to my party! An election poster for my first year running in ESC! Maggie’s idea, Huiyi’s wordings, my young look. HAHA!
Anyway the weather cleared up and I really wanted to go back to my original plan, so my flower power and muscle team came together to helped me move my buffet to the pit area! They didn’t even bother to move the caterer’s tables over. :P Feast your eyes on this spread by Catering Culture …
Menu includes Potato Salad with Chicken Ham, Corn & Crabstick Mayo Sandwiches as starters. Main is Spaghetti Aglio Olio w/ Mushrooms. Light bites are Baked Quiche Lorraine, Baked Mushrooms Chicken Pie, Fried Chicken Lollipop, BBQ Cheese Sausage, and Har Gao. Fruit punch (in my own mason jars!!!) was included in the package.
The food looks amazing isn’t it? I decided to order from Catering Culture because I wanted a more different menu than the usual Oriental food fare. For $10/pax, I think Catering Culture really provided a variety that kept my guests happy. The company’s customer service is good as well, reviewing my order and confirming me with the details at least twice before my event.
As for the food wise. What I have heard from my guests (because I didn’t have any except the main) is that most of the dishes are really delicious! Except the quiche lorraine, which wasn’ as tasty as they thought. I think their favourites were the fried chicken lollipops (plus point: easy to eat compared to small drumlets & wings) and the cheesy sausage! I was surprised that the aglio olio is spicy though! I felt the company should have an indication to show me which dishes are spicy. Apologies to my guests who couldn’t take spicy food!
There were also some add ons to the buffet spread…
Yakult, kit kat, gummy bears, hichews, and real cherries (not captured in photo) sponsored by my mommy!!! I have to admit, the Yakult was a really good idea ^^
Chips and tiger beer (not captured in photo) sponsored by my cheer buddy, Matt! The paper bag is another idea stolen from Pinterest. :P
Because I sincerely want my guests to ENJOY the food. :)
Now on to the desserts! This is a special spread baked and created by 3 lovely friends. Show you from a bird’s eye view first…
Looks so pretty right??? :D Now onto some individual introduction…
I absolutely adore macaronssss, especially earl grey flavoured. So when I was discussing with Samantha, she suggested peach which is her best selling flavour. And I suggested lemon because I think something citrusy will be nice (plus in a nice shade of lemon yellow!) When I expressed my love for earl grey macaron, she suggested a mint colouring for it to suit my theme. So, tadah, my pretty macarons!!! And oh gosh, do they taste as good as they looked! I highly recommend to anyone who is thinking of ordering home made macarons. At $1.50/pc it is about the cheapest you can find out there as well!
Me sneaking a piece off the stand.
Looking sooo satisfied after that piece X)

What can beat a classic fruit tart? These mini fruit tarts really send me up to the clouds! Created by Huixin, I first tasted this at Maggie’s 21st. And I know I absolutely have to have them at my party! The crust is crispy and the custard is not overpowering. The fruits are fresh and well proportioned with the filling and crust. The whole combination is just heavenly lor! Yum yums! :D But guess what, I didn’t even get a piece of this and it’s all gone. -.-

Ordered a dozen of this just cos I think it will look nice in photos (I don’t really have a sweet tooth). Tasted it a bit though, it’s Vanilla Strawberry with Nutella centre (recommendation from the chef) Sounds overwhelming right? But it is so delicious! The flavours complemented each other so well, without being too sweet. I like! ^^ And need I say more, the intricate icing on the cupcake make this a winner out of all the cupcakes I’ve ever seen!!! Almost too pretty to eat them XD

Lo and behold, the talk of the party, my birthday cake! I got an Awfully Chocolate Chocolate Banana because it’s one of my favourite cakes! (Not a cake person) I love the chocolate banana combination with the soft & moist cake. :) But I know it is not a very photogenic one, plus being a 21st birthday cake, it should be a bit more special! So I engaged Nadia to put her signature rosettes on the cake. Look at the result:
OMBRE ROSETTE ICING. Like OH MY GOSH. It is so pretty I want to tear when I see it. (Just like Vanessa during her 21st :P) It is absolutely like one of those cakes on Pinterest that is just soooo pretty!
So time for the cake cutting…
Saw the heart candle in Art Friend and I know I just had to get it!!! Heehee ^^
Must Instagram first!!! Love it when my friends are Instagram freaks like me too. HAHA!
Finally with the lead there. For a moment I felt overshadowed by the cake lor! Okay kidding!
Always there for me in times of need ^^
Awkard time~ When people start singing the birthday song for me. Nevertheless, still very happy!
Long eyelashes really makes me prettier. :P Anyway it is really funny when everything has to be done in slow mo.
My family ♥ Thank you for being so supportive of my current career, and always being there. I am so grateful for my parents who made me who I am today. I may not be the perfect person, but I know I am a good one. And of course my sister, who is the weird & funny one. But also the rock in my life. :)
The only guy in my life ♥ Thank you for being my bff, my listening ear, my shoulder to lean on, my boyfriend. Knowing you is one of the best things in my life, you are the absolute comfort for me :)
The Kee family who treats me like their own family ♥
My lao yi and lao dioh who always dotes on me and my siblings ♥
My xiao gu and family & san shen and family! ♥ So happy to see my cousins too!
My maternal relatives! ♥ I always enjoy a gathering with them at jiu jiu’s house ^^
2J’06 of AHS ♥ Secondary school really made best with this class! Wish more of them could come! I will never forget our secondary school days, heehee ^^
4D’08 ♥ my closest bunch of people in there :)
My two best friends in life ♥ I can’t imagine my life without them. We have been through so much together since we’re 14 years old. Even though we have been walking very different paths ever since we knew each other (the only common being our first workplace), I never ever felt awkward with them. We witnessed each other grow up, change, get attached, work… Basically through phases of life. Thank you girls for being there, always! :)
The Engine school people (Can you spot the late comers :P) ♥ Been through so many events together! From AY09/10 - AY 11/12. Who knew you can find true friends within the chaos? Thank you all for your encouragements, support, and teamwork. We have created (bitter)sweet memories that is engraved in my heart. And you all know why there’s some bitter in the sweet ;)
My lovely P901♥ I believe, and I know we are the best class around! :D From self organised “Sports Day” to class trips, there is never a dull moment with my class! They are the reason why I attend lectures & tutorials with a happy heart (when I do). XD
My Girlies (and the boy seen in Skype because she is in Tamworth) ♥ Always there for each other in our ups and downs. Spamming our group chat with the littlest details in our own lives. They listen to my randomest thoughts & entertain them! The same statements would definitely be ignored by normal people. We can always be ourselves with each other and not be judged. I think words just can’t express how important this group of girls are in my life. :)
Babygirls ♥ All you need is us to run the empire ;) I’m just kidding :P Thinking back to Folken times, the 5 of us worked really hard together. We sweat together, scold together, starve together, cry together, htht together, all because of Folken. Although it is a short period, but the bond among us lasted way beyond the fever of FO. To me, we are the most excellent, because of our superb teamwork. It is really something that I feel proud of. And the best memory of FO? I got this group of girls ;D
My Cabin Crewz at Station! (More not photographed because of flights) ♥ The newest addition into my life. They are the anchor in my career and I can’t imagine where I will float to without them around. Really hope to fly with them very soon! Here’s wishing a safe flying career to us ^^
My bros! ♥ Always so ready to help me out. Feel like a little sister to all of them, being doted on. Heehee :) Especially this birthday, they were the ones who were helping me with all the heavy stuff, and also refusing to let my father help. Can’t be more thankful! Looking forward to more chilling sessions together ^^
Okay end of the photo taking because I have to distribute my cake!
Ending this post with stunning bottles of Moscato & Champagne sponsored by my dear sister! Sooooo me right aren’t they? ;)
Really huge THANKS go out to my flower power and muscle team for making this al fresco party come true for me :’) I feel so loved! And of course a big THANK YOU to all who took the time out to attend this humble celebration of mine & shower me with so many presents :) I AM TWENTY ONE NOW! Whee~
